Let me begin with the statement of Paul in Rom. 3:9-12; What shall we conclude then? Are we any better? Not at all! We have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under sin. As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.” Paul here is writing to those who believe in Rome and among those who are under the condemnation of sin, he includes himself when he asks, “Are we any better? In our humanity, we have all turned away and together become worthless; our own, none of us ever does any good; and if we inadvertently manage to do good outside Christ. Isaiah confirms this in Isa 64:6 All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.
